Uptown/Downtown Dress

Welcome to one of three stop on today’s Sew Straight Patterns Blog Tour! We are celebrating of the release of The Uptown/Downtown Dress Pattern! Be sure to read all the way to the bottom to learn how you can enter the giveaway AND get 30% off the Uptown/Downtown Pattern now through August 16th!

If you follow my facebook or instagram feed, you saw I posted a picture of my serger admitting that it was time to use it to it’s full potential. Well here’s what I made with it!

The Uptown/Downtown dress, available in sizes 2T – size 10! Isn’t it adorable? I made the entire dress on my serger using a 5-thread safety stitch and the cover stitch, but the good news is, you don’t need a serger to make this adorable knit dress! UptownDowntownSide

The Uptown/Downtown dress goes together in a flash and makes a comfy and adorable back-to-school and every-day dress. You can make it sleeveless, with cap sleeves (shown here) or with half sleeves.

Elise’s measurements fell under the 2T size in the chart so that’s exactly what I made with no alterations. She loved the dress immediately and didn’t want to take it off. She just had to wear it to church the next day!UptownDowntownSideSmile

All the pattern pieces wen’t together perfectly! I chose the binding method, but there are also instructions for using a lining for sheerer knits or just for warmth. Overall I’d say it was a win and a pattern we’ll make over and over!UptownDowntownG

Coachella Shorts

I’m so excited to share with you the inaugural pattern from Striped Swallow Designs!

Striped Swallow Designs Coachella Shorts | JaimeSews

I was chosen to test this pattern and it will be ready for release very soon so be sure to like their facebook page so you can be one of the first to know! The Coachella Shorts are low-rise girls shorts with a fun piecing detail that works well with all kinds of trim. You could use pom pom trim, lace, bias tape – anything really – to spruce them up and make them truly one of a kind each time you make them!

I chose a soft chambray from F&M Fabrics and a giant pink rick rack I had on hand from Pick Your Plum.

The back fits well and with no pockets, you can construct these shorts in a flash!

The 1″ wide waistband is secure and comfortable. As soon as my DD woke up from her nap and put them on, I couldn’t get them off of her! She absolutely loved them. I definitely see more Coachella shorts this summer and with sizes 12 months through size 12 included, they just may be a staple summer pattern for years to come.

JaimeSews on Zulilly

Hi Friends, I have some fun news to share with you today. Several weeks back I was contacted via Etsy convo by someone saying she was a buyer for Zulilly. I had a mixture of reactions – initially I let out an audible and gleeful, “HA!” Then the rational side of me rushed in and said, ‘Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight…a buyer for Zulilly…is this a scam?!” But indeed, it was not a scam, and truly she is a buyer for Zulilly.com!

Tarah and I spoke on the phone the next day and she mentioned she was interested in the Maggie Mae. Of course I was thrilled since Maggie Mae is my absolute most favorite design. I contacted Shauna from ShwinDesigns to double-triple check it was OK to use her pattern for the Zulilly event and she was very gracious and encouraging. Then I looked at my fabric and thought the Geekly Chic Fabrics from Riley Blake Designs would make adorable Maggie Maes so I got to work!

JaimeSews on Zulilly

I had picked up some of this chambray from F&M Fabrics just a few weeks before and thought it would work well with the Yellow Glasses. I also got my buttons there. All the dresses had to be made before the event was scheduled so I was in production for about 2 weeks making 33 tunics – 30 to sell and 3 as samples to mail to them for photography.

JaimeSews on Zulilly

Samples were in the mail 2 weeks ago and I got word last week that the Maggie Maes would be included in today’s Trend Talk City Kids’ Boutique!

JaimeSews on Zulilly

Zulilly is a great place to get a super deal on your favorite brands. And you’ll want to grab these Maggie Mae’s through them since they are almost 50% off retail!! Anything that remains will be listed in my Etsy shop for full retail price.

So I would love it if you would help me spread the word!

And if you’re a boutique owner interested in working with Zulilly, you can apply right here. The people at Zulilly were great to work with and they are interested in helping small boutique owners grow – so check it out – it may be a good opportunity for you too!

The Tinley Tee

I hope everyone had a great Mother’s Day yesterday! I got in a nap even, so you know mine was good!

GYCT Tinley Tee | JaimeSews

I had a great time last week pattern testing The Tinley Tee for Chelsea of GYCTDesigns! This is a sweet little t-shirt pattern pattern with so many sleeve and hem options, you’ll never need another t-shirt pattern!

TinleyTeeOptions GYCT Designs

I was assigned to test the long sleeve, banded hem version and I was so excited it was a t-shirt since I had found this great knit at F&M Fabrics a few weeks back with no real plans for how to use it. It was just meant to be! This pattern is a one hour project, cutting to finish. It is such a quick satisfying project and you don’t need a serger – I made this version all on my regular home sewing machine.

The Lorelei Dress

Kids Clothes Week starts TODAY! Be sure to follow me on Facebook or Instagram to see what I’m up to this week and I’d love to see your KCW creations too!

I am so thrilled to have connected with pattern designer Elizabeth Shepherd of E-Beth Designs. When she put out the call for testers for The Lorelei Dress, I was thrilled to be accepted! Lorelei Dress Pattern by E-Beth Designs | JaimeSews

The Lorelei is perfect for Easter and will last you all summer. It is a fitted dress with a yolk an empire waist and an optional sash that makes into a wonderfully large bow.Lorelei Dress Pattern by E-Beth Designs | JaimeSews

The dress is fully lined and has a row of gathered netting/tulle sewn into the skirt lining that gives it some body & movement for a retro feel. There is a zipper in this dress and some hand sewing on the yolk facing, so if you’re ready to take the next step in your sewing, this would be a great choice.Lorelei Dress Pattern by E-Beth Designs | JaimeSews

It’s  just a classic, beautiful design that can be made fancier with satin and lace, or for every day in cottons & eyelet. Be sure to check out the E-Beth Designs blog post featuring all the tester dresses to see this design made up in other fabrics and styles.Lorelei Dress Pattern by E-Beth Designs | JaimeSews

The Belinda Dress

I am so excited to partner with my friend Michelle Kaufman of Photography By Michelle to test out a little product photography. The first two pictures below are her work.

I know Spring is upon most of us and most of you are looking forward to sunshine and flipflops, but as a California girl myself who never really got a winter this year, I wouldn’t mind some colder days to cozy up in something like this Belinda Dress from Go To Patterns (BTW, Andrea Pannell, in case you’re reading, every time my daughter wears this dress, everyone wishes this pattern came in adult sizes!!)

The Belinda Dress is a bubble dress pattern designed for knits and works wonderfully with this sweatshirt knit I got from GirlCharlee.com. With no closures, it goes together quickly and can be made with or without the front pocket. You could even make it with a knit on top and a woven on the bottom.

The puff sleeves are adorable and my daughter LOVES the huge pocket – she proudly announces it’s presence to everyone who comments on her dress.

If you have not worked with knits before, I think a sweatshirt knit is great starting point. They not super stretchy and the thicker texture makes it easier to work with, as opposed to a slippery jersey knit. Also it is so rewarding to work with ribbing. Just stretch it to fit the length of the fabric it’s being applied to, sew, turn up and top stitch and you have a very easy, yet professional finish.
